It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday

It's been about a year since I've posted on this blog (sad, I know--not that anyone's reading anyway, but if you are reading, well thanks! You're rad). It was kind of fun coming back and reading the posts I wrote last year. They aren't quite as mundane or embarrassing as I thought they might of been when I first wrote them.

Anyways, since I never gave this blog the proper sign off it deserved, I'm writing now to say that I have moved on to another blogging apparatus called Tumblr. Check it out, it's pretty neat. I'll try and post regularly there. But I probably won't. Sorry.

And this post just wouldn't be complete without Boyz II Men. Goodbye.

Unfair and Unbalanced

A prime example of bad, biased journalism.



The fact that the host, Doug McKelway, took the whole issue of not outing public figures soooo personally to the point of threatening his guest with physical violence makes me wonder which closeted public figure he's boning. Needless to say, McKelway was extremely unprofessional and biased. I'm surprised he even had a job after that attack. And he didn't even see the movie!

To make matters worse, McKelway went on the air the following day to issue an anti-apology. Whatta douchebag.

I liked his co-host's spiel at the end about journalistic professionalism. Maybe McKelway will take a hint and get some.

Brave New Voices

Spoken word/slam poetry has always been one of my favorite art forms. I have the utmost respect for a lot of these poets. The way some of these cats are able to rhyme and twist their words and make them flow so freely often from the depths of their most inner and private thoughts is a really beautiful and powerful thing to see. So when a new series like "Brave New Voices" comes along, from producers Russell Simmons and Stan Lathan, the same dudes who brought us "Def Poetry," I know it's going to be good. And not just good, but great. Fantastic. Mind-blowing, even. And the minute I get hooked on it like a crackwhore the gotdamned cable company takes away my HBO.

SO to feed my fix I am reduced to watching YouTube videos of performances from some of the young poets on the show, as well as revisiting old "Def Poetry" performances, some of my faves which I have posted below. Also, some of the poems are NSFW, so make sure to wear headphones (but if you have shitty sound on your computer like I do, the headphones might be handy either way).


Zora Howard, 13, "Bi-Racial Hair". She really brought the house down with this one. It's amazing how young some of these poets are, and yet possess the talent of someone way beyond their years.



Jasmine Mans, 17, one of the poets on "BNV" Incredibly powerful, she really took it "there."


Sista Queen, "Try Being a Lady". She's a beast with words.


Shanelle Gabriel, "Why I Love You". This poem is probs why I love Shanelle...so witty.


Phylicia Rashad, "On Status". This woman is something of a living legend, whether on stage or on the small screen as my all-time favorite TV mom. I can personally relate to this poem.


Carlos Andres Gomez, "Distinctly Beautiful". Ummm WHERE can I find a man like THIS? He really speaks the truth on men and women and gender roles in modern society. Male feminism is sexy.

Diamonds On the Soles of My Shoes

I've been in a pretty blah/anxious/restless sort of mood as of late (much to do with the Bulls losing the series, THANKS guys) and I think writing will help ease my uneasiness. So let me dust off the cobwebs of this blog and get "write" to it, heh.

After spending an incredibly uninviting and uneventful fall semester at UA, I realized my heart just wasn't in it. There was no room to grow (mentally, emotionally, creatively, financially, socially, etc...). I may have been raised in a small town, but I truly am a city girl at heart and I need that hustle and bustle of city life to thrive and spread my wings. I think transferring was probably one of the worst decisions I have ever made, but familial and financial pressures will make you do crazy things, I suppose.

I'm glad I took this semester off. It was a good time for me to reflect and mentally prepare myself for things to come. For the first time I feel like I am finally on the right track to getting my life to where I want it to be. And while I know I won't always have people support or understand my decisions, I know that I just have to trust my instincts and stay focused on my life goals. I feel like I've missed out on so many life-changing opportunities because of silly mistakes I've made. And these mistakes were made mostly because I did not trust my instincts and believe in myself. But I'm learning to just let go and live my life. I'm a do me. No more listening to nay-sayers (aka HATERS) or second-guessing myself. I'm turning over a new leaf, chickies. Here's to new beginnings and a new ME. Love me or hate me, you will respect me. Okay, I'm done with the cliches.

Oh and Summer '09, watch out! It's going to be grand. Here's a list of things to look forward to (in order of awesomeness):

*Making a CHI-TOWN comeback!

*Reuniting with all my Chi lovelies (and seeing Maria graduate!)

*Attending my very first Lollapalooza (finally) and second P4K Fest (maybe).

*FANTASTIC weather and FREE outdoor festivals!!

*Gettin' back on my grind and working towards a media internship by fall or spring semester.

There's more to come, I'm sure. May 14th could not get here soon enough.

I Love This Woman

Michelle Obama is my shero. She's smart, graceful, funny, real, and just an all around awesome lady. She even buys her own clothes...with her own money! Michelle Obama: just like us!

The Return of 30 Rock

My Thursday nights are finally complete. With the return of "30 Rock," I now have the joy of sitting in front of my television from the hours of 8 and 10 pm, as I watch back-to-back episodes of "The Office," "30 Rock," and "ER." It's like receiving a little bit of Christmas goodness every week. "30 Rock" comes back with its third season premiere this Thursday night on NBC, but you can catch an early sneak peek on hulu.com. With the show snagging two Emmys for outstanding comedy series and show creator/writer Tina Fey winning an Emmy and Golden Globe for best lead actress as well as an Emmy for best writing--not to mention her spot-on "SNL" parodies as Alaskan governor Sarah Palin--I think it's safe to say "30 Rock" will have another successful season. The new season has gotten off to a hilarious start (SPOILER ALERT). In the first episode Liz Lemon (Fey) tries to keep the "TGS" staff in line as an adoption agency evaluator (Megan Mullally) drops by her job. Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) tries to get his old job back as network executive, going head-to-head with current network exec. Devon Banks (Will Arnett), but soon realizes that he will have to make his way to the top from the bottom...as a mail room clerk. If the first episode is any implication, then the rest of season three should be a real treat. Guest appearances this season include Oprah Winfrey, Rose McGowan, Steve Martin, and Salma Hayek, who portrays Jack's new girlfriend in multiple episodes.
